David lynch 3-25-09

Right now I am painting away every day for my first Gallery show, doing work that has little to no relation to caricature. While I'm painting I listen to a lot of Audio books, Youtube Videos, etc...
I have been exceptionally stimulated by the ideas of Malcolm Gladwell, and a book he recently wrote called Outliers. In it, among lots of stories and ideas, he outright disclaims talent, and puts forth the idea of this  concept of a 10,000 hrs rule. This rule says that it takes 10,000 hours to become really good at any one thing. The Beatles, Bill Gates, and I am going to go ahead and put Jason Seiler in this category, are not talented but have an exceptional love for the thing they do, the kind of love that allows someone to spend 10,000 hours studying one thing.
So here is my attempt to begin 10,000 hours doing one of the things I love, caricature. I guess I'm about 500 or so hours in.

Here's the weekends effort:

triptych

I'd like to do a triptych of the Darjeeling bros. I've already sketched Schwartzman so it's kind of neat to see how Brody's been done as well. We'll see.

it's been a while...

heya... it's been a while since I did a caricature I was happy with. It's just a citizen caricature, not a celeb, but fun none the less. hope you like.

Birthday Present

This guy was getting a surfboard for his B-day, and I was asked to design the card. It turned out to be a hit, so we printed it up and framed it for him.

Mr. Sellapan Ramanathan - President of Singapore

Inspired by Houston's painting of Mr. Ma Ying-jeou, President of Taiwan, I decided to do one for Mr. Sellapan Ramanathan, President of Singapore.

Putin

This was my outcome for this week's assignment...
Vladamir Putin. Funny what you can come up with using 3 different colors. I learned a lot on this one.
Looking forward to seeing everyone elses assignments.

Oscar Night

Kate Winslet looks quite a sturdy lass. She's holding her Oscar so tight round the waist it would bring tears to the eyes I shouldn't wonder!
(I did this with pastel on paper for a change.)

Too long without a post...

This is Charles Krauthammer, Michael Douglas, and Kevin James (Doug Heffernan). My brother and I come up with topics that we use to sketch from. Our latest one was people that had something to do with our name whether it be the person's actual name or their character's name. My middle name is Charles.

Hopkins - Bedtime Stories - Final

Well, here is the finished illustration for my final submission on the caricature course. Little has changed in terms of structure between this and the value painting but I got to have fun working on the details such as the texture of the leather chair and the wrinkles and crease's of Lecter's face.
Signing up for the Seiler Caricature Course has been the best decision I've made in order to advance my artistic skills. Anyone reading this who is debating as to whether to give it a go, I simply say 'do it, you'll have no regrets'. Regardless of skill level or experience, Jason's instruction will improve anyone who follows it.
To the rest of my online classmates, its been great seeing you progress and its helped me push myself further. I hope to see you all publishing on here in the future.
